How to Read an Optical Link Specification
A checklist for reviewing wavelength, data rate, channel count, fiber type, BER, FEC assumptions, power, temperature, and link margin.
Begin by defining the boundary
Before comparing headline numbers, identify what the specification includes. Is data rate per lane or aggregate? Is bandwidth one-way or bidirectional? Does power include lasers, drivers, TIAs, control, and thermal stabilization? Is the reported bit-error rate before or after forward error correction?
Then record wavelength, fiber type, reach, connectors, operating temperature, and the assumptions behind the link budget. Separate measured performance from simulated targets, and reserve margin for aging, contamination, repair, and manufacturing variation.
