Coupling efficiency is important, but it is only one line in a manufacturing and reliability budget. The optical interface must also tolerate lateral, vertical, angular, wavelength, polarization, and temperature variation—then remain stable through assembly and field life.

Edge and grating couplers create different choices around bandwidth, footprint, attach geometry, test access, and packaging flow. The right solution depends on the complete interface, including the fiber array, adhesives, mechanical references, inspection, active or passive alignment, and test strategy.
